Time to get serious...

Well, now that I got old red running, I guess it's time to get it running well. I ordered a carb rebuild kit and a reprint of the repair manualfor the Case SC with the Eagle Hitch. They should be here next week sometime, so next weekend should be time for some mechanican...

Dad picked up the 2 row McCormick Deering corn planter we saw in colorado on when I first saw old red, and he is bringing that back with him, so we can start playing with that too. Hopefully I will be able to find a manual for that, but that's a topic for another blog entry...

SUCCESS!!

Today was a great day in the life of Old Red! After messing with the carburator all morning because it didn't seem to be getting any gas (and because when I took it apart the bowls were packed full of mud!!) I took a little emery cloth and some PB Blaster to it and got the floats moving.

We went and bought a new starter button, as the old one got stuck the first time I pushed it. The starter ran and ran until I finally got the hot lead removed from the solenoid!

A couple pumps of gas and a new gasket later, we got it started! I drove it out of the shop and power washed it, and then drove it back in!

Now I need to bold the water pump, fan, and radiator back in place before I can run it very long, but I am just thrilled that it started!

Cutting Up
Sunday, September 2, 2007, 04:49 PM - General, Tractor
For some reason there was a piece of pipe with a flat metal bar welded next to the seat. Since it didn't come that way, and I couldn't see that it added anything new functionality, and I didn't like the way it looked, I decided it had to come off.

About ten minutes with the cutting torch made quick work of it.

Now I just need to do a little grinding and it will be gone.

Catching Up

Well, I have been remiss in my blogging duties. I have been faithfully restoring old red every weekend since I got her. About 3 weeks ago we pulled it around with the David Brown, only to find that the engine was siezed. We took off the head and found that piston #1 was rusted into place. While taking off the head, we busted off the top of the Oil Tube running from the block to the top where the rocker arms are.

A bottle of Marvel Miracle Oil and a little external force (aka Adam and I beating on it with a rubber mallet and a block of wood) and she was running free and clean. Dad picked up a cylinder hone, and Katy and I spend a sunday cleaning up the insides of the cylinders.

I ordered an engine gasket set off the web, and since I couldn't find a replacement part, I took the old pipe over to Glen and had him weld it. So far so good.

Katy, Dad and I bolted the head back into place, and put the rocker arms back in place, and with a little grinding and some more external force the oil tube slipped right into place.

My New Tractor - Old Red
Tuesday, July 17, 2007, 12:17 PM - General, Tractor
During my recent trip to Colorado I bought a 1954 Case SC tractor. I'm sure I'll devote a number of blog entries in the future to the restoration of this baby!
